Creating a showreel in the animation industry is crucial for showcasing your skills, creativity, and range of work to potential employers or customers. In other words, a strong showreel can be a stepping-stone to your dream company and project. Based on that realization, I did some study and research, and I summarized the points I felt important below.
- Be specific and know who you’re targeting:
As I define myself as a 2D animator and illustrator, I think I’ll focus on putting my 2D work in my showreel.
- Content:
- Quality is more important than quantity.
- The length of your reel should not be over 2 minutes, and ideally it would be under a minute.
- Put your best work first, making sure you have things that grab the audience’s attention.
- Show a variety of projects that demonstrate your skill set, such as character animation, motion design, or storyboarding.
- Introduce your role and title. For me, it could be like:
Film Title: Beneath the Bubble
Image/Video
Animator|Director|Illustrator
- Music
Choose a track that complements the energy and vibe of your animation. The music should enhance the mood, but it shouldn’t overpower or distract from the work.
Use original animation voice-over and audio if possible.
- Other Tips
Include a title card at the beginning and end (with your contact information)
